In the words of the Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh’s (Deemed to be University) Director aka Vice Chancellor Dr. Dheeraj Sanghi the fun at the institute’s first mega event Homecoming 2020 was not just to be limited to the wide spread day long activities at the Campus only as some alums decided to have even more activities on both the days succeeding or following the day for run up to the Alma Mater. From cheering up at a private screening of the documentary movie, “Tinanjali” by PEC’s alum, #SusheelKamotra, playing golf, biking around
raising a toast to the nostalgia shared by alum Air Vice Marshal #Rakesh Yadav, VSM at the beautiful Air Force Station base at Chandigarh
to another concurrent event at the city’s local chapter of the Institution of Engineers by the civil batch of 1978 and their cemented spouses.
As the trio of AVM Rakesh Yadav, (an Aeronautics Graduate of 1970), Retired Chief Engineer PWD (UP) #VDSharma (of the 1978 batch of the civil stream) and this author #TejinderSinghBedi (of the 1973 batch of Electrical), touched the outskirts of the air force station in their otherwise non stop drive to the alma mater, it was natural for Rakesh Yadav and his better half Tanuja Yadav to get nostalgic about the years they had spent there long back as a Group Captain and the decision to stop at the base was a natural fall out.
The Yadav couple proudly showed us how the two had together given a befitting face lift to the building complex and its facilities including a beautiful officers mess, its integrated bar, the billiards and the ante rooms, the courtyard, the flora and fauna around the huge complex and even in design of its parking lots way back in 2002.
The sight of an imposing MIG parked close by appeared symbolic of the superannuation of the PEC Alums in attendance in all their gusto!. The facility had been inaugurated by the then Air Vice Marshal S K JIndal. For the duo of Rakesh & Tanuja Yadav, a retired General Manager(HR) from the ONGC, it was indeed so pleasant that the ambience of these all was still in tact ever since first renovated under his command.It was a greater pleasure for the team to meet the present decorated Station Commandant Group Captain Ramamoorthy specially turning up to say a warm welcome to the city beautiful.
Another halt to follow was alum V D Sharma’ and his better half Suman Sharma’s family get together of PEC’s Civil batch of 1978’s at the Chandigarh office of the Institution of Engineers in Sector 19 though the Civil Engineers had made sure that the Electrical Engineer accompanying had been stoutly earthed at the campus and the aeronautical put on his flight back!
The trio was as charged as all the other 1100 plus alums (their family members included) could be seen later in the campus during the day long non-stop activities spread across the huge campus of the institute. The oldies in the sixties, seventies and eighties all appeared charged and behaving as young as still in the middle of their life spans except for the repeated recall of the old Bollywood classics and their melodies and rather simple living habits. The youngsters for a change exhibited a feeling as if they had become siblings of all of these sexgeneraions and other seniors in just one large family nurtured by this great institute, thanks to the untiring efforts of the PEC Team to put this action into what it has turned out to be!
